Increasing access and success for youth from foster care

Fostering Success Michigan builds a statewide network that connects youth with foster care experience to education, opportunity, and support—transforming educational and career outcomes across Michigan.

Our mission is to increase access and success in postsecondary education among Michigan’s students with experience in foster care through the building of a holistic network that insulates (i.e., strengthens protective factors and reduces risks) the education to career “pipeline” for students from foster care.

The Need

Most of the resources that help young people succeed in high school, access college or technical training, and transition into careers exist outside the child welfare system. Child welfare is designed to ensure safety and permanency—not educational success or workforce readiness.

Fostering Success Michigan fills this gap. By aligning students, educators, and cross-sector partners in a statewide network, FSM connects youth with experience in foster care to the resources and support they need to succeed in education and build meaningful careers.
